    The Unstoppable Will vs. The Unstoppable Mouth

    The main difference between The Punisher and Deadpool is motivation. Both appear to be sociopaths. But Frank Castle is driven by vengeance and Wade Wilson’s main concern is his paycheck. Neither wants to admit how deeply they are actually driven by emotion.

    In Deadpool vs. Punisher #1, Fred Van Lente serves up a script that puts these two on opposite sides of an ambiguous moral scenario.

    Wilson and Castle are very familiar with each other’s work. Wilson thinks Castle is a “self-righteous, sociopathic, shoot-first-ask-questions-never, humorless, fascist hard-ass.” Castle views Wilson as a “motor-mouthed, muddle-headed, arrested adolescent with delusions of competence.”

    Deadpool vs. Punisher #1 opens with Punisher working undercover at an underground illegal gambling club. “VS.” is a place where degenerates gather to place wagers on superheroes. Some names on the board include Spider-Man (original, probably), Captain American Falcon, and Guy who thinks he’s Hercules.

    After Punisher violently shuts down the club, he gets the information he’s been after. That’s when the desperate club manager gives up details on The Bank in order to save his own life. The Bank is Castle’s true target. But he’s also Wade Wilson’s accountant, money launderer, client, and close friend.

    Pere Perez’ artwork suits the script perfectly. And there are plenty of background details, but not so many as to distract from well-planned action sequences. In addition, he nails the expressions on the unmasked characters. Perez brilliantly telegraphs nuanced expression through Pool’s mask and body language.

    Van Lente sets up an interesting “best of five rounds” scenario. With a clear winner in each of the planned five chapters, Deadpool is playing with a loaded deck. With his regenerative abilities, he can afford to lose four of five battles and still come back for the next installment. Punisher doesn’t have the same luxury.

    The Best Marvel Sidekicks

    Sidekicks are an integral part of comic books, serving alongside superheroes as they save the day time and time again. These characters have become icons in their own right. But they often lack the recognition that their hero counterparts get. So, it’s time to give these characters the credit they deserve.

    Last week, we brought you a rundown of the best sidekicks in the DC Universe. This week it’s time to highlight comic giant Marvel’s best sidekicks.

    HYDRA Bob

    Bob is a fan favorite character. He appears in the Marvel Universe as Deadpool’s sometimes sidekick. Deadpool’s feelings toward Bob vacillate depending on the specific series. Bob’s contribution to Deadpool’s well-being (well, whatever passes for well-being for Deadpool) can’t be ignored. Bob defected from HYDRA when Deadpool broke into the organization’s headquarters in order to save Agent X. Bob supplied the Merc with valuable insight into HYDRA’s inner workings. Since then, HYDRA Bob has been present for many of the antihero’s greatest antics–getting a nod in the 2016 movie.

    A member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Howling Commandos, Dum Dum Dugan is best known as Nick Fury’s sidekick. And he has a great deal of page time in his own right. But he got his start helping Fury out after he saved the S.H.I.E.L.D. leader from Nazi’s in World War 2. Fury relies so much on Dugan he had his personality uploaded into an android (a “life model decoy”) to keep him going after the original Dugan was killed in a mission in the 50’s.

    Some might argue that Bucky doesn’t really count as a sidekick because he’s now a hero in his own right. But we disagree. Bucky got his start as a member of Captain America’s team. He even joined Rogers on his first mission against Red Skull. During World War 2, Bucky was a constant companion of the good Captain. Like many other Marvel sidekicks, Bucky was soon molded into a hero in his own right. He first took a long detour as the villain version of the Winter Soldier. Then eventually took over the Captain America mantel. Currently a hero, the Winter Soldier would never have become the crime fighter he is had it not been for Roger’s tutelage.

    We could make a strong argument that all of the X-Men are Charles Xavier’s sidekicks, but we’ll save that for another time. Instead, let’s highlight one of the best hero sidekick relationships in the long history of the X-Men franchise–Wolverine and Jubilee. Jubilee was first inducted into the X-Men after saving Wolverine from Reavers. After that, she joins the man on several missions, illustrating first hand how useful she is by saving Wolverine time and time again. Their relationship immediately takes on a father/daughter dynamic. Jubilee is constantly prodding at the older X-Men member and Wolverine doing everything he can to protect her.

    Jim Rhodes

    Jim Rhodes has evolved from his sidekick beginning, becoming a superhero in his own right. For decades, Rhodes (Rhodey to Tony Stark) has piloted a version of the Iron Man suit known as War Machine. A former military commander and pilot, he met Tony Stark when his plane was shot down over enemy territory. After they successfully teamed up to escape, Rhodes and Stark forged a lasting friendship that developed into partnership. Stark trusted Rhodes to back him up in any crises. Rhodes even took over the Iron Man mantle when Stark was unable to safely fill the roll, However, the suit hadn’t been properly calibrated to Rhodes’s brain.

    Best of Marvel MAX

    Comics aren’t just for kids, is a refrain you’ll often hear from fans and it’s true. Marvel took things to a new level though with their mature content imprint MAX. Created in 2001, Marvel MAX focuses on darker heroes from the Marvel universe or creating new more morally complex characters. MAX’s R-rated comic content gives adult readers a more grown up reading experience.

    Here are some of MAX’s best titles:

    He’s a half-vampire, half-human vampire hunter. And he uses an arsenal of extreme weaponry to slay the undead. The MAX line gave creators the opportunity to tell the scary and violent stories Blade fans had been waiting years for.

    Deadpool has long been a fan of four letter words and extreme violence. So, his MAX book allows him to really cut loose and be the best mercenary he could. This version retains the humor that made the character so popular. But it also frees the creative team of the limitations of a mainstream book. The result is one of Deadpool’s craziest adventures.

     WOLVERINE

    Wolverine’s berserker rage is on full display in this series. He’s been freed of the X-Men continuity and content restrictions. Now Wolverine is turned loose in a more gritty and noirish story. The violent and brooding world of Wolverine fit perfectly with the darker, more grown up tone of the MAX books.

    THE PUNISHER

    If any character was made for a MAX book, it’s Frank Castle. And he’s finally able to deliver the bloody retribution he had been talking about for decades. Writer Garth Ennis was able to dig deeper into the psyche of The Punisher than ever before. Yet the book still delivers some of the finest action sequences in the character’s history.

    If we can thank the MAX line for anything it’s the creation of Jessica Jones. She’s now a mainstay of the Marvel universe. Jessica was introduced in the Alias gritty detective series. Writer Brian Michael Bendis gives is a beautifully flawed and compelling protagonist. But he also shines a light on the more human side of superheroes.

    Catastrophe Looms in New Bloodshot Miniseries

    A lot of comics come out each week on New Comic Book Day. Some are good, some are bad, and some are worse. Here are a few of our favorites from this week’s new comic book releases.     Deadpool #21

    Holy Tacos! More pages?! That’s right true believers, this is not an ordinary Deadpool comic. This 60 page issue contains two stories! The first, written by Gerry Duggan, unveils Wilson’s great Christmas spirit. Also, Bob and Emily Preston make a nice cameo and Mad Cap stirs the plot for further issues. The writing team for this issue has definitely made this Deadpool more like Ryan Reynolds, and I love it!!

    The second story throws you a huge curve ball by writing in iambic pentameter. For Shakespeare fans this is great, and a fun task for avid readers of Deadpool. Ian Doescher (Of William Shakespeare’s Star Wars fame) still maintains The Merc with the Mouth’s exorbitant humor. While adding a sophisticated spin to it.     GIVE INTO DEADPOOL, AND CHIMICHANGAS!

    Bloodshot is a super-soldier. Imbued with nanites that regenerate any and all damaged cells, blood, and bone. This also allows him to impersonate others and enabling him to interface with machinery. Once controlled by the programming of Project Rising Spirit, an elite and shadowy governmental organization, Bloodshot was their enhanced operative.

    Bloodshot USA jumps right into the action as those very same nanites have been weaponized, and now spread like a virus, infecting the populace of New York. Enter Unity, the supergroup of heroes who act as Earth’s protectors.

    Can even the great Unity do anything to stop this outbreak? When a few of the members fall victim to the virus, the prospects look weak for stemming the tide. Splendid art, and well-paced storytelling keep this one moving, and as a longtime fan of the series, I am entirely on for this ride! [Casey D. at TFAW.com]

    JUMP INTO BLOODSHOT BEFORE HE HITS THE BIG SCREEN

    John Bloody Constantine, is there any other way to say his name? Hellblazer #3 delves into what’s been hunting John as Swap Thing searches for clues as to where his love, Abby, went. Something dark, ancient, and angry is hunting our heroes.

    Simon Oliver did a great job with this issue, ensuring that if you haven’t read the previous two Rebirth issues so far, you can jump in here and be fine. Moritat and Andre Szymanowicz work well together on the art, giving us different worlds when highlighting the various environments we see in this issue.

    With Friends Like These, Deadpool Annual #1

    deadpool annual #1 coverDeadpool and his friends appearing in a Saturday morning kids’ show? What could go wrong?

    Plenty as seen in the main story in this year’s annual, which has Deadpool coming across an old VHS tape containing the rejected pilot for his show, “Deadpool and His Insufferable Pals.” If that sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because it a rip-off of the actual kids’ show, “Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.”

    That actual show from the 1980s featured roommates Spidey, Iceman and Firestar hanging out together and fighting baddies like Videoman, Scorpio and Magneto. This version replaces Peter Parker with Deadpool – ushering in the chaos as well as the laughs.
    Deadpool convinces Iceman and Firestar that the Sinister Six have killed Spider-Man. Incensed by the loss of their friend – and inspired by Deadpool’s utter disregard for human life – the trio wipes out the baddies in various non-heroic ways.

    Scott Koblish’s simple, clean drawings invoke the show’s uninspired 80s animation, while writers Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn nail the stilted dialog from the kids’ show (“That was a fun night of dancing, Angelica!”). Adding Deadpool into the mix provides the needed spice for the saccharine language. Though like his big screen adventure, this version of the show is decidedly not kid-friendly. After Kraven the Hunter grabs a snake from his waste and throws it at Deadpool, the Merc with a Mouth responds, “Nice try, Kraven, but I think you’ll find that Deadpool has experience handling trouser snakes.”

    A secondary story written and drawn by Adam Warren showcases some elaborate artwork, though the story is far less entertaining than the Spidey knockoff.

    With a sequel to the Deadpool movie in the works, maybe a version of this cartoon could show ahead of the main feature.

    Review: Uncanny Avengers #11

    Review of Uncanny Avengers #11

    uncanny avengers #11In The Uncanny Avengers #10, we saw the return of Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp. She was called in as a favor from Tony Stark to try and assess how much of Hank Pym remains in the newly returned Pym/Ultron amalgam. When Pymtron fails to catch Van Dyne’s reference to Ghostbusters and then also buys into her made up story about a beach vacation that she and Hank never took, Van Dyne takes a hard stance that Pym is dead and Ultron must be destroyed. She temporarily disables Pymtron with an EMP device and the chapter closes with Deadpool pulling the trigger of a rifle aimed at Pymtron’s head at point blank range.

    The Uncanny Avengers #11 opens right where #10 left us. Deadpool doesn’t usually miss what he aims at, so he either intentionally pierced Pymtron’s ear, or lost his nerve. While the Degenerate Regenerate is delivering an ultimatum for surrender, Pymtron punches some sort of invasive electronic device into Deadpool’s chest.

    With the rest of the team chasing after Pymtron, Cable tries to remove the device from ‘Pool’s body, only to discover he won’t be able to unless it is first disabled with another EMP blast. Problem is, Van Dyne’s miniature EMP device only had one shot in it, and she used that one to temporarily disable Pymtron the first time. She will have to wait for it to recharge, then make a decision to either save Deadpool, or take down Pymtron long enough for the team to rescue Pym’s body from the machine.

    The pacing of The Man Who Fell To Earth has been non-stop since it picked up in The Uncanny Avengers #9. The story is blazing right along, and the teaser page promises the action will continue into the next chapter with “Project Icarus,” a secret failsafe the Avengers have put into place for just such an occasion.

    Review: Spider-Man Deadpool #6

    Review of Spider-Man Deadpool #6

    spider-man deadpool #6In Spider-Man Deadpool #5, we saw Peter Parker die (twice) at the hands of Deadpool. Instead of going to hell, where ‘Pool expected, Parker ended up somewhere else, fighting for his life (soul?) against Mysterio and his manifestations of Gwen Stacy, Uncle Ben, and Doc Ock. When Deadpool arrived to help Pete fight his way out of wherever this was, DP called in a favor with his old flame, Death, and got Peter sent home. And then…we have a one-shot guest issue.

    Comedy Bang! Bang! host Scott Aukerman fills in for Joe Kelly on Spider-Man Deadpool #6 with a story that is definitely not in sequence with the time line that’s been established in the rest of the series. We’ll have to wait until next month to find out what happens in the aftermath of Pete’s brushes with death, why Patient Zero was dressed as Peter Parker and masqueraded as Pete at Parker Industries, and how Peter Parker/Spider-Man feel about being assassinated (twice) by the Merc’ with a Mouth.

    So…A few months ago, definitely before Spider-Man/Deadpool #1, but some time after Amazing Spider-Man #1, Deadpool learns that a movie is (finally) being made about his exploits and gets offered a job doing stunts for the lead actor, Donald Dryons (a spitting image of Ryan Reynolds, but with a mustache, so clearly NOT Ryan Reynolds). ‘Pool convinces Spider-Man to tag along to Hollywood, promising him an executive producer credit on the film.

    The story is very funny. There are several tongue in cheek self-deprecating jokes, and some shots fired at DC as well. My favorite gag in the issue (and I’m only giving one, so that you, dear reader, will get to experience the rest for yourself) is a movie poster advertising the new blockbuster film “Nighthawk V Hyperion: Yawn of Boredom.”

    Aukerman does a great job writing quips, one liners, and gags for both titular characters. Reilly Brown has drawn several stories for Spider-Man and Deadpool franchises, so he’s no stranger to the appearance or ambulation of either character. SMDP6 works well as a one-shot. If it were released on its own, prior to the current series, it would be a stand out. Unfortunately, being thrown into the middle of this awesome series will draw natural comparison to the regular creative team.

    Review: Spider-Man Deadpool #5

    spider-man deadpool #5Peter Parker is dead. I know what you’re thinking. He can’t really be dead, can he? He can. He is. Dead. Perished. Liquidated. Breathless. Pushing up daisies. Expired. Extinct. Cadaverous. This isn’t some trick with a body double, or a clone, or an android. Peter Parker is dead.

    Deadpool cashed in his contract on Peter Parker to end chapter four. One bullet in Parker’s face, two in his chest. This happened only hours after Spider-Man and Deadpool had the time of their lives tearing up the dance floor in ‘Pool’s night club. The Merc’ with a Mouth was finally getting some traction in his efforts to befriend Spidey, and then unknowingly killed him the very next morning.

    The first scenes of Spider-Man Deadpool #5 show Peter Parker headed toward the proverbial light, and Deadpool giddily getting dressed up to bear witness to Parker’s torture in Hell. Deadpool is so certain that Parker will end up in Hell, based on the information that was provided for him by his mysterious client, that he has reserved a spot for Pete with one of Hell’s master torturers.

    When Peter doesn’t show, DP assumes the wires must have gotten crossed somehow. He enlists the help of his wife Shiklah to bring Parker back to life, so he can send him off again, hopefully to the destination ‘Pool was initially anticipating.

    When killing Peter Parker twice doesn’t land Parker’s soul in hell, Deadpool is finally starting to come around that he may have been duped. Peter Parker must be a good man. But where is Pete’s soul now?

    Joe Kelly continues to show us a side of Deadpool that isn’t seen very often. ‘Pool apparently has a deep sense of honor and morality, he just doesn’t know how to express these traits without sending some lead down range and making penis jokes. He honestly thought he was ridding the world of a “mad scientist hell-bent on abusing wealth and power to generally screw over mankind.”

    Mistakes happen.

    Now Deadpool is on a relentless mission to save Peter Parker’s soul. You see what they did there? This whole time, we thought Parker would be the one saving Deadpool’s soul.

    Review: Spider-Man Deadpool #4

    spider-man deadpool #4Isn’t It Bromantic? has thus far been alternately ridiculous and intensely serious. In the case of Spider-Man Deadpool #4, Joe Kelly suckers us into thinking this issue is a comedic break from the seriousness of a world-class assassin trying to kill Peter Parker. The chapter appears to focus entirely on the silliness of a world-class assassin marking out hard to Spider-Man and desperately trying to gain his approval. Just when the action in this issue can’t get any goofier, Kelly turns your expectations around and uses them to bludgeon you over the head.

    Spider-Man is starting to think Deadpool is a pretty okay guy, so much that he calls Deadpool and invites ‘Pool to hang out. Deadpool sets the whole evening up, and Spidey ends up on a blind double date wearing an image inducer that gives the appearance that he is not wearing his costume. It also gives the appearance that he is a young black man.

    Spider-Man’s date seems too perfect. She’s gorgeous, and is interested in every subject Spidey brings to the table. She even edits scientific journals. How appropriate is that? Spider-Man is falling in love. Deadpool’s date hasn’t yet arrived, and he hasn’t mentioned who his date will be. Since ‘Pool has orchestrated the event, you’re kept wondering when the other shoe will drop.

    When the second shoe does finally fall, it’s a sucker punch. One page after a brilliant Dirty Dancing sight gag, the series is dead serious again. Kelly spent an entire chapter setting up the punch line of the last two page spread, and then leaves you hanging until next time.

    This series keeps surprising me by being way better than I expected. The pacing seems a little disjointed, until you realize it’s being done intentionally to keep you off balance and finally give in to it. Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness are in rare form. I’ve started counting the remaining issues in this series, wanting to know how it will end, while simultaneously wishing it wouldn’t.

    The Darkseid War rocked the Justice League. Putting each of them through trials which found fresh perspectives, and illuminated some things that they did not realize were in the shadows. In recent history, we saw Superman save the world from a corrupted energy version of himself by ultimately sacrificing himself for the survival of DC’s Earth.

    Superman’s willingness to put the world before himself is one of his most enduring character elements and even Lex Luthor has to recognize that. In true Lex fashion, he pays what form of respect that he has for our hero by adopting the House of El’s shield on his redesigned battle armor. Setting out on a mission to acquire the fallen Superman’s cape to wear with it, so that he can become the new savior of Metropolis. Lex Luthor experiences his own Rebirth, and though the members of the Justice League are unsure of where Lex’s rebirth will lead, so far they aren’t out to stop him. After all, there is another, true Superman which he is unaware of. Chalk up another victory to DC’s Rebirth line for taking their comics to great new frontiers! I’m excited to see where we’re going.     Bitch Planet #8 hits all the notes you’d expect from the DeConnick—De Landro team. The art is on point, and the characters are every bit as endearing as ever.

    The story of Meiko’s father takes a surprising turn which manages to escalate Kamau’s search for her sister. Unbeknownst to them, we—the readers—get a shocking and (in true DeConnick fashion) uncomfortable glimpse into what Kamau is currently up to.

    The best elements of De Landro’s art are on display in this issue. At a glance, faces and backgrounds appear simplified and stripped down, but digging deeper, he reveals details that have astonishing implications for the overall story implications for the overall story. DeConnick’s writing isn’t different in that regard. Many of the conversations are designed for the astute reader to pick up on references to previous issues. On the flipside, new ideas are seeded (such as a strange cult-like meeting in the basement of a bar) as we see more and more of the horrifying world of Bitch Planet. [Tim S. At TFAW.com]

    From the writers who brought you Thunderbolts and one of the artists behind Gwenpool, comes the all-new five issue mini-series, Deadpool V Gambit: The V is for VS.

    I have always been keen on the writers who take on Deadpool, and Ben Acker and Ben Blacker definitely know what they are doing with the Merc with a Mouth. If you don’t know much about Gambit, that’s okay! This issue gives you a good feel of what he’s like and what powers he possesses.

    Now on to the fight! We love seeing this Mercenary fight with anyone that will bring him the big bucks! However, this issue will surprise you as it’s not your traditional VS (or is it V now?) mini-series. Gambit the Cajun magician and Deadpool the Merc who needs money, bring you this amazing, hilarious issue.     Review: Spider-Man Deadpool #3

    Review: Spider-Man Deadpool #3

    Spider-Man Deadpool #3In the first two chapters of Isn’t It Bromantic, Spider-Man has been doing his level best to avoid spending any time at all around Deadpool. At the end of the last issue, DP shows a moment of humanity when he saves the life of Mysterio, Quentin Beck, after having run him down with the ‘Pool Buggy. Spider-Man is moved enough by ‘Pool’s gesture that he finally breaks down and gives Deadpool his phone number.

    Spider-Man Deadpool #3 opens in Quentin Beck’s hospital room, where Deadpool and Peter Parker are both visiting the comatose Beck. It looks as though ‘Pool is about to cash in his contract on Pete when Spider-Man (Hobie Brown) appears and distracts Deadpool long enough for Peter Parker to suggest that Spider-Man and Deadpool have a man-date the following day.

    On said man-date, a series of smash cuts takes us from staged scene to staged scene, where the Merc’ with a Mouth is desperately trying (and failing) to convince Spider-Man that he is a changed man. The action really starts to pick up when the duo ends up in a Bolivian village, where they meet up with the Mercs For Money (TM, patent pending). One of the best interactions in the chapter happens in the middle of a massive gunfight. Spider-Man, who does not speak any Spanish, tries to interview Massacre, who speaks no English, about Deadpool’s character and intent.

    So far, this has been a very solid series. These first three issues have primarily been setting up the inevitable confrontation between Deadpool and Spider-Man. We’re starting to see some real depth to Deadpool’s constitution. We still don’t know who is pulling the strings to frame Peter Parker and get him killed, and Spider-Man is yet unaware of the volume or horrific nature of the evidence against Peter Parker. Deadpool has no idea that the man he’s trying to kill and his hero, who he’s trying to manipulate into helping, are one and the same.

    The slow building tension is palpable. I’m sitting somewhere between eagerness and anxiety regarding the seemingly inexorable showdown between ‘Pool and Spidey.

    Review: Spider-Man Deadpool #2

    spider-man deadpool #2The opening issue of this series was so good I was hesitant to read the second. Luckily, Spider-Man Deadpool #2 lived up to the previous issue’s standard, and may have even bested it.

    The tone of this chapter starts out much darker than last. A mysterious client, identified only as “Patient Zero,” has hired the Merc’ with a Mouth to kill Peter Parker. In order to convince Deadpool that Parker does indeed need killing, Patient Zero has sent him a barrage of “evidence” that supposedly shows that Peter Parker and Parker Industries, Inc. are involved in “some seriously sick shenanigans.” Apparently ‘Pool gets very alliterative when he’s upset.

    Spider-Man is still having a really hard time balancing his priorities between being a big-shot CEO and a masked hero. The problem is exacerbated when Deadpool lets him in on the plan to kill Peter Parker, and enlists Spidey to assist. Deadpool’s efforts to convince Spider-Man that Peter Parker needs to stop breathing do not make his dual identity any easier to maintain.

    Someone is going to great effort to make these two end up at each other’s throats. With the amount and irrefutable nature of evidence that conveniently surfaces for Deadpool to discover, a showdown appears imminent.

    This issue is lighter on the humor, although we do get a shot of Deadpool’s testes, sitting in a jar on Shiklah’s dresser. It’s also more of an even showcase than the previous issue, which featured Deadpool more prominently than Spider-Man. I usually am not a huge fan of such dialogue-heavy action sequences, but somehow Kelly and McGuiness make it work.
